Nigeria, Benin Republic reopens bilateral relations for flow of trade, commerce


President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reiterated its commitment towards strengthening the bilateral relationship between Nigeria and Benin Republic for free flow of trade and commerce.

Briefing Journalists on Tuesday at a close border meeting between Nigeria and Benin Republic  at the Anguwar sule Wara in Benin Republic border station, the Nigeria Minister of Foreign Affairs Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar said that the aim of the meeting was to open a trade and commerce between the two countries.

“As directed by the Mr. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu that the bilateral relationship between Nigeria and Benin Republic should be reopened to strengthen trade and commerce of the two countries” he said.



He disclosed further that the meeting had also identified some challenges such as infrastructure, roads and security for the attention of the two sister nation’s.

Also speaking, the Kebbi State Governor Comrade Dr.Nasir Idris commended President Tinubu for his commitment towards promoting economic development of the country.

He added that if Nigeria and Benin Republic borders had been working and fully implemented it would boost the economy and internal generating revenue of the countries.

“I’m the most happiest person at this moment because if the border is fully opened our petty traders will enjoy their businesses and it will boost the economy of Kebbi State,” he said.

The Nigeria Customs Comptroller General, Bashar Adewale Adeniyi also applauded the Nigeria President and Benin Republic president for reopening bilateral relationship between the two countries adding that the relationship will strengthen the business of the two countries.

In their separate speeches the Benin Republic Minister of Finance and Foreign Affairs, H.E Romuald Wadagni and H E Shegun Bakari Adjadi assured the Nigeria Government that the Benin Republic Government of its readiness to partner with the Nigeria Government on bilateral relationship.

They said very soon the Benin Republic will complete the border bridge between the two countries to ease business flow.

“We agreed with the reopening of the bilateral relationship between Nigeria and Benin Republic which we think it will boost the business of the two countries” they said.

Also speaking, the Benin Republic DG incharge of customs Adidjatou Hassan Zannari said that the agreement will go a long way in uniting the two countries and promoting their economic drives.
