ASF France Holds Training for Lawyers on Human Rights

As part of its commitment to the promotion and protection of human rights in Nigeria, and in its continuous exercise to boost the capacity of lawyers, Avocats Sans Frontières France with the financial support of the German Embassy in Nigeria, implemented a training on human rights for lawyers in Nigeria on the 9th – 10th September 2021.

The training for lawyers was held on the platform of the ‘Promoting the United Nations Convention Against Torture (ProCAT) project’.

The 2-day training served as a follow-up to a similar training held in June 2021 in commemoration of the international day in support of victims of torture. The training was disseminated virtually to 23 lawyers from across the country and was aimed at equipping trainees with specific skills to adequately represent victims of human rights violations in Nigeria.

The fully packed training featured different topics and sessions including sessions on; the United Nations Convention Against Torture (UNCAT), Anti-torture Act (2017), remedies for torture victims, redress through international mechanisms, psychological support for victims of torture and lots of brainstorming and group works on case studies and legal texts.

The training achieved its set objectives, as the capacities of the lawyers in attendance were improved to adequately represent victims of human rights violations in Nigeria.

Speaking on the impact of the training, one of the beneficiaries, Chidera Ikemba said “I really want to thank the organizers of this program for the total training package. The sessions exposed me to torture scenarios and legal actions for the support of torture victims. I am very happy to gain this new knowledge, and I am looking forward to implementing this in my legal career”.

Mrs. Edugie Amihere, the ProCAT Project Case law Manager, speaking to the beneficiaries at the training said, “Lawyers are the custodians of the defense of these victims of human rights violations, it is important for lawyers to know how to positively navigate the processes and provisions of the law to ensure redress and accountability for victims of human rights violations”

The ProCAT project is being implemented in Nigeria by Avocats Sans Frontières France and co-funded by the United Nations Voluntary Fund for Victims of Torture (UNVFT) and the German Embassy in Nigeria.

Niger Gov Calls For Continuous Prayer for Kontagora Emirates, Set to Elect New Emir

Governor Abubakar Sani Bello of Niger State has played host to many prominent personalities and other Muslim Ummah who were present at the three days Firdau prayer for the repose of the soul of the late Emir of Kontagora Alhaji Saidu Namaska, at the Emir’s palace Kontagora. 

The event which was well attended, attracted many Islamic scholars and was characterized by special prayers from different Imams as well as recitation of the Holy Qua’arn. 

Governor Bello admonished the people not to relent in praying for the late Emir, his family and the entire people of Kontagora Emirate.  

He enjoined the people of Kontagora Emirate to remain calm and patient in the present situation as the process of electing a new emir will soon commence.  

He explained that the kingmakers would soon converged to start the process in accordance to the law as expected. 

The Governor while praying to Allah to guide the Kingmakers in doing the needful in selecting someone that will continue with the good legacies of the late Emir, noted that the growth and development of the emirate should be given priority.  

“I appeal to the people of Kontagora to be patient, whoever is going to be the next Emir, God has already destined but at the same time, it is also important for the Kingmakers to do the needful, take their time and go with the voices of the people and select the right Emir that will be beneficial to Kontagora Emirate”, he said. 

He expressed gratitude to all those who shared with the Emirate in her moment of grief and prayed Allah to reward them all. 

Etsu Nupe and Chairman Niger State Traditional Council, Alh. Yahaya Abubakar, represented by the Emir of Kagara, Alh Ahmed Garba Attahiru said, they have no doubt lost a father but believe Allah will direct the kingmakers in the election of the new Emir. 

Sarkin Mallamai Kontagora and former Military Governor of Kano State, Col. Sani Bello also prayed for a successful process of selecting a new Emir when the time comes while calling on whoever will emerge the new Emir to accept it and see it as an act of Allah. 

The Madawakin Kontagora, Alh Aminu Mohammed who is now coordinating the affairs of the Emirate before an Emir is elected, thanked the role played particularly by the Governor and all his support to the Emirate.  

Former governor of Niger State, Dr. Mua’zu Babangida Aliyu, some members of National and State Assembly as well as other dignitaries were at the three days Firdau prayer. 

El-Rufai condoles family, Church over murder of cleric in Zangon Kataf LGA.

……Appeals for calm after cruel and horrifying killing.

Security agencies have reported to the Kaduna State Government the killing of Reverend Silas Yakubu Ali, Pastor of ECWA Church, Kibori-Asha Awuce, in Zangon Kataf LGA, by unknown assailants.

The report stated that Reverend Ali departed for Kafanchan on Saturday, and was not heard from until his corpse was found by a search party early on Sunday at Kibori community, near Asha-Awuce, where he was apparently attacked and macheted to death.

The Governor of Kaduna State, Malam Nasir El-Rufai has expressed deep sadness at the report of the killing, which he described as horrifying and cruel. The Governor offered prayers for the repose of the soul of the cleric.

In a statement signed by the Commissioner for Internal Security, Samuel Aruwan, Governor El-Rufai sent his condolences to the family of Reverend Silas Yakubu Ali, and to the ECWA Church in Kibori-Asha Awuce, as he prayed for God to grant them fortitude and comfort over this sudden and painful loss.

The Governor urged security agencies to intensify efforts towards apprehending the perpetrators of the heinous killing, while appealing to members of the community to maintain calm.

Security agencies are conducting investigations in the general area.
